Saybrook
is a township, or area, of Ashtabula County in the northeast corner of Ohio, near Lake Erie. Ashtabula County is called Ohio's Wine County, and is home to more than a dozen wineries. Many of the wineries offer romantic dining, wine tasting and tours. Ashtabula County is also the Covered Bridge Capital of Ohio, with 16 covered bridges. A well-marked route covers about 65 miles and crosses nine of the covered bridges, a tour that is especially beautiful during autumn. The city of Ashtabula also hosts an annual Covered Bridge Festival, the second weekend of October. Other attractions in Ashtabula near Saybrook include Pymatuning Lake, the NOEMA Gemstone Mine, the Conneaut Railroad Museum, the Hubbard House Museum, the Great Lakes Marine and Coast Guard Museum. Enjoy drives in the countryside and visit a bison farm, country farm stands, flea markets and a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm. There's a nice hillside park across from the Marine and Coast Guard Museum that offers lovely views of the harbor. In the city of Ashtabula, the entire area of Ashtabula from 5th Street to the river is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Northeast Ohio, along the shores of Lake Erie, has a distinct four-season climate. Summers are warm and humid, although not as humid as other areas of the country, such as the deep south. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are a possibility in the summertime. Winters in Northeast Ohio are cold and snowy. Severe lake effect snowstorms are common along the shores of Lake Erie, which is a designated snowbelt area. This region of Ohio gets more snow than any other area in the state. Spring is often unpredictable and generally comes late to Northeast Ohio. Autumn is beautiful with mild days and cool evenings. Fall is also the sunniest time of the year. Earthquakes are a possibility, although few are even noticed by the average citizen. The most recent earthquake occurred on December 31, 2011 and had a magnitude of 4.0.
