Chillicothe is located in south-central Ohio along the Scioto River. The population is approximately 22,500. This historic city was the first capital of the state from 1803 to 1810. Then again from 1812 to 1816 when it was moved to Columbus. In ancient times, Hopewell Indians lived here and built earthen burial mounds throughout the area along the Scioto and Ohio Rivers. The Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is located on the north end of the city. Prior to the Civil War, free blacks migrated to Chillicothe because there were fewer restrictions for them here than in the southern slave states. As a result, a vibrant community of African Americans was established who aided runaway slaves coming north. Chillicothe was in a prime location to help them, as they traveled across the Ohio River, then up the Scioto River to Underground Railroad stations located in Chillicothe. Several beautiful parks are located in Chillicothe, and the city's floodwall has a half-mile long paved bike trail that connects to the Tri-County Triangle Trail. The city celebrates the area's Native American history by hosting the Feast of the Flowering Moon Festival in May of each year. It's held in Yoctangee Park in downtown Chillicothe, and features Native American music, dancing, arts and crafts, games, food and a mountain men encampment. In September, the Southern Ohio Storytelling Festival is held in Chillicothe, and features performances by award-winning storytellers.
